Since 2000 or so, Jay Thurber has been alternately delighting and dismaying radio listeners around the Greater Pittsburgh area.

Beginning with one or two short appearances on WWCS (540) in Canonsburg, Jay went in a short time from obscurity to irrelevance, hosting a Saturday morning show on Carnegie Mellon University’s WRCT-FM (88.3).

In the mid-2000s, Jay’s show — called “Radio 9,” in honor of WRCT’s old frequency at 900 on the AM dial — was moved to Saturday afternoons, where it’s remained a frightening reality ever since.

In 2015, Jay and a team of volunteers set up a non-commercial Internet station, Tube City Online Radio, in McKeesport, to fill a niche for public broadcasting in that Mon Valley community.

Today, Jay broadcasts from the former McKeesport Daily News Building (now known as the Tube City Center for Business & Industry), alongside other community groups and, the, uh, train tracks.

“Radio 9 with Jay Thurber” features dusty discs, priceless platters and all of the songs that Pittsburgh threw up grew up with from the late ’50s, ’60s and early ’70s, plus some novelties and obscurities.

Radio 9 also features news and public service updates from FSN and Public News Service, as well as the WRCT Radio Calendar in the 1 o’clock hour.

Listen live at 88.3 MHz (that’s “megacycles” on your FM radio) or www.wrct.org, or at Tube City Online Radio on http://www.tubecityonline.com/radio.

Jay and his wife live in the Mon Valley, with too many old radios and more stuffed animals than grown adults should probably own.

  1. Radio Nine has been required saturday listening in my home for the last 5 years (when I accidently discovered it). You are by far my favorite Pittsburgh radio personality and pretty much the only reason I bother with FM anymore (with an exception of a handful of others: Bumble bee Slim, Witherspoon, Helen Wigger, Studebaker, SLB etc) I love the deep pittsburgh history media celeb gags and your olides mix is spot on.

  2. I love Pittsburgh for so many reasons, none of which are Steelers, Primanti’s, (they’re more on the like catergory) or the boy mayor. You are one one of the top reasons <3
